So it’s all been arranged – a “Happiness Engineer” called Hew at the WordPress.com guided transfer service is going to take all of this stuff and move it over to a WordPress.org installation hosted by HostGator. That’ll happen between 02:00 UTC Wednesday and 02:00 UTC Thursday this week. [That's the wee small hours in the UK, evening in the US, and lunchtime in Australia.]

When I wake up in the morning, I’ll have to wait up to a day before I can see the new site. So it may look weird at first, but I’ll get things all how I like them again  soon enough. And then I can start adding some of the new things (and new contributors) I’ve been thinking about – I’ve got people waiting to jump in your eyeballs and tell you all kinds of stuff.

It’s going to be fun. But first, it’s going to be messy and awkward, so bear with me while I get things straightened out again on Thursday and Friday. By the weekend, we should be back to better than normal. See you on the other side!

  1. Please tell us how it went — I am thinking of doing the same thing this week.

    • All seems to have gone great – everything was rendered as close to the pre-switch site as possible, though I’ve changed the theme since. I was pleased with it, haven’t needed to use the 2-week support service or anything. If you have the cash and don’t want to spend your time doing it yourself, it’s worth it.

  2. Came across your post on Google after searching for info on the WP Guided Transfer. Now that it’s been a few months, are you still happy? I need to transfer my blog and was looking at having someone do it for me (because I’m clueless when it comes to this stuff and don’t want to mess it up) and then I saw the Guided Transfer option. I’m thinking it may be smart to go right through them, rather than someone outside WP. I’ll probably do it, unless I hear of any horror stories! So, still happy?

    • Hey Christine, yes – I’m still very happy with the service I received. That said, there are cheaper solutions.

Did you know that if you buy web hosting with HostGator they will usually transfer your WordPress.com site content over for free? (That’s an affiliate link, btw.) I’ve used them to transfer content on a couple of my other sites, and they were just as good as WordPress.
