May I add that the suitcase we got was shit! It broke before we got to Bath train station. All we did was do a bit of window shopping on the way, and the wheels caved in. So the moral of this story is, don’t buy cheap suitcases – unless you want to put stabilisers on it after your first trip :)

I didn’t know about Google using it for text digitsation – nifty! Totally disagree with your point about pattern recognition setting us apart, though; if that were true, what would be the point of eyes on butterflies’ wings, and why would horses freak out at a snake-shaped object in their path?

I’m a perpetual pareidolic whose brain makes mashups out of everything I experience all the damn time, so I’m kinda hoping to find a hidden lack of meaning, just for a change of pace.

We always try and find patterns in apparent randomness. It’s what sets us apart from all the other species.

I also love CAPTCHA – and I love that the version that Google uses actually helps Google clean up the Google book digitisation effort. So when the system finds a word it can’t figure out it throws it into reCAPTCHA and the collective “we” fix it up.

It will be interesting to see what your experiment shows up. Perhaps Google is adding some additional personalisation under the covers!
